A heat pump needs a properly matched system
Air source heat pumps move available heat from outside air into a home’s heating and hot-water system. Their performance depends heavily on design. Heat loss, flow temperature, radiator or underfloor output, cylinder selection, controls and commissioning all need to work together.
We start with suitability rather than assumption. Some properties may be ready for a heat pump; others benefit from insulation, draught reduction, radiator changes or controls work first. In some cases, improving the current heating system is the sensible immediate step while a longer-term plan is developed.

Enhanced £9,000 rate available until
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) can reduce the upfront cost of an eligible air-to-water heat pump. The amount depends on whether the property is classed as off the gas grid and which heating fuel is being replaced—not simply on the property postcode.
£7,500
On-grid homes and other standard-rate applications
Eligible air-to-water heat-pump installations in properties that are not classed as off-gas-grid can receive £7,500. This is the route likely to apply when replacing mains-gas heating. The £7,500 rate can also apply to some off-grid homes replacing coal, direct electric or another eligible system.

£9,000
Eligible oil or LPG homes off the gas grid
An eligible off-gas-grid property replacing an oil or LPG heating system with an air-to-water heat pump can receive £9,000. The enhanced rate is available for qualifying applications from 21 July 2026 until 31 March 2027.
- No mains-gas fuel supply or existing gas-meter-point record
- The property must not be connected to a heat network
- The heating system being replaced must use oil or LPG
- New-build properties do not qualify for this enhanced route
How the grant works
The application is installer-led and shown in your quote.
- We assess the property, heat loss, emitters, hot water, electrics and proposed outdoor-unit location.
- The project follows the appropriate MCS route, and an MCS-certified installer submits the BUS application on the property owner’s behalf.
- Ofgem contacts the property owner to confirm consent and relevant eligibility details.
- If the application is approved, the full grant value appears as an upfront deduction from the quotation and final invoice; it is not paid to the customer as cash.
- Installation, commissioning and handover. Once all eligibility checks are approved and your quotation is accepted, SwiftHeat UK Group Ltd installs, tests and commissions your new air source heat pump, then provides a clear handover. We manage the entire process for seamless integration into a cleaner, lower-carbon heating system for your home.
Important: grant support is subject to the live Boiler Upgrade Scheme rules, property and technology eligibility, funding availability and Ofgem approval. A capped or clamped gas meter can still mean a property is treated as mains-gas fuelled. SwiftHeat UK will explain the likely route, but no grant can be guaranteed before the official checks are complete.

Heat pumps often run for longer periods at steadier temperatures than traditional boilers. That operating pattern can deliver excellent comfort, but only when the system is sized, controlled and explained properly. Oversimplified comparisons based only on unit output can be misleading.

Will an air source heat pump work in an older home?
It can, but age alone does not decide suitability. Heat loss, achievable fabric improvements, radiator output, pipework, hot-water needs and available space are more useful design factors.
Do all radiators need replacing?
Not necessarily. Each emitter should be checked against the room requirement and proposed flow temperature. Some may be adequate, while selected rooms may need larger radiators or another solution.

The enhanced £9,000 value is for an eligible off-gas-grid property replacing oil or LPG with an air-to-water or ground source heat pump. The property must meet the scheme’s off-gas-grid definition, including having no mains-gas fuel supply or existing gas-meter-point record, and the enhanced rate is available for qualifying applications until 31 March 2027.
Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant paid directly to me?
No. The chosen MCS-certified installer applies on the property owner’s behalf and must show the full grant value as an upfront deduction from the quote and final invoice. Ofgem confirms eligibility and issues the voucher through the official application process.
Can you improve my home before a heat-pump installation?
